Let’s start with a quick definition of sustainability. Merriam-Webster defines sustainability as, “of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged.” Woah, that's a run-on sentence. Let's break it down.
When it comes to jewelry, sustainability is all about the impact the jewelry has on the environment. Sustainable jewelry leaves the smallest carbon footprint possible by recycling metals, using sustainable mining techniques, and by upcycling or recycling jewelry.
Other than repairs or minor changes that are made, no new resources are required to create vintage jewelry. It’s the most sustainable jewelry option. Plus, by purchasing a piece of vintage jewelry you ensure the metal isn’t melted down and recycled, which is sustainable, but not as sustainable as keeping the jewelry in its original state.
Because it’s super pretty AND super good for the planet. Win-win. It’s that simple.
